3 Rules for the Ride

August 9, 2017

Before starting my trip across America I would like to lay out a few rules for the ride. I like the idea of knowing that you will be following along to hold me accountable.

1. Safety first:

It is one of the most basic things about my trip but it makes the list at number one. I want to be able to come home from this journey and share my stories with all of you. I understand there are risks associated with a bike ride across the country and that drivers are more distracted now than ever before. I hope by respecting the road that the road will respect me and that I will complete this journey safely. I will do everything in my power to avoid dangerous or unsafe riding conditions.

2. No cheating:

There will be no advancement - with my path that means I will not move forward, South, West or North. Pedal-power will push me forward across the country. The bike tour is supposed to challenge my limits physically. *If I run into mechanical issues and have to hitch hike a few miles I do not plan on making up the extra miles as it is to hard to ride back on the course.

3. Let’s Take Time To...:

It’s the theme of the journey and ultimately serves as a reminder that life is short and time is precious and let’s take the time to do the things that are most important to us. This trip is not about reaching a finish line. Despite the fact that I ran across 35+ finish lines in my life, it’s about the 5,000 miles of pavement from Bar Harbor, Maine to Los Angeles, California. I want to take time to enjoy the people, the places, and the experiences; that is what the ride if all about. Enjoy the time on the road, like everything else it will eventually come to an end.
